Susan Jarmo

I was born in Hungary in 1956. I am the only child of my parents. I completed my high school diploma with an additional fashion school training. I married first time at the age of 19. My daughter was born the following year. I have emigrated to Australia in 1982, with my 5 years old daughter. In 1995 I was married for the third time, and my son was born in the same year. Here in Australia I was working in the fashion industry. In 1990 I started with my tertiary studies at Swinburne University. I majored in psychology, and philosophy. I did my honours in cultural studies.  During and after university I still worked in the fashion industry till 2003. Meanwhile my husband started his business, and I was helping him to start up, and I am still providing clerical support to him. During my university years I became involved with preventative medicine, and completed a few different qualifications in this field between 1992 and 2005. I also completed a Graduate Certificate in Integrative Medicine at Swinburne in 2005.

I opened my natural health clinic in 2003. At the premises I also ran the office of the Massage Association of Australia between 2004 and 2009, tripling the membership, and making the organisation viable. Currently I am studying for my Masters in Public Health, my aim is to use my skills to help keeping our community healthy.

I have an extensive list of voluntary work, starting from 1992. I was a counsellor with the Office of Correction in Frankston, looking after the community based order clients in 1992-1993. In 1994 I was going to Fairlea Womens’ Prison on a weekly bases working with the women in the protection unit. Meanwhile I was the member of the management committee for WHISE (Women’s Health in the South East), and Valerie House domestic violence refuge. During this period I was also involved with the setting up of the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition.  I was the member of the Peninsula BPW (Business and Professional Women) between 1992 and 1996, served as a Division Liaison Officer for Victoria in 1993 and Vice President (Internal – membership) in 1994. I was less active while my husband’s business was in its early days, as the working hours prevented me from attending meetings.  Currently I am involved with the Frankston 2025 Community Advisory Group since 2006, the Frankston North Community Renewal Steering Committee since 2007, and the Community Advisory Group for the Peninsula Link since 2009.

I have rejoined the VIRWC recently, and I am looking forward to use my skills to help women to make better life for themselves and their families.
