Amara Hamid has worked for Kingston City Council since 2003. She began work with the council as a health promotion project worker for one year, and moved to take up a role in a federally funded “early strengthening families” project called Connecting the Community. After the three year funding completed the Council gave her funding to engage in community development for two years and she has now moved to the youth and family support team to take up the role of Senior Family Support Worker, Universal Family Support Program.
She is very passionate about her work and always chooses to work in the community. She says that this is what she loves to do-- work and empower people especially women and get paid for it.
Prior to working for Kingston she worked for 10 years with Australia Post in different roles.
She says: “My life experiences have been influenced by my desire to support and contribute to improving my life and the lives of others.” She arrived in Australia in 1988 as a refugee from Eritrea. She now lives in Clayton with her two children, son Wehaj 17 y.o. and daughter Areej, who is 16.
When not working at Kingston she supports the development of her community through her contributions to organisations including VIRWC, The Eritrean Women's Group and the South Eastern African Women’s Network.
She has a Degree in Social Work from Monash University. Ms. Hamid is a qualified Family Therapist and currently studying Masters of International and Community Development (distance education). Her skills include speaking four Horn of African languages including Arabic, Amharic, Tigre, and Tigrinya.
