Since 2002, the VIRWC has been providing tailored women's leadership courses to enhance immigrant and refugee women's active participation in society. To date, the VIRWC has delivered these courses to more than 350 women through consultancy work for local councils. Through partnership and sponsorship, migrant and refugee women are trained without paying a fee, except transport cost. Leadership Training for Senior Women From Immigrant and Refugee Backgrounds Train the Trainer: Women’s Leadership Course A select group of 25 immigrant and refugee women who have been through the leadership courses delivered by the VIRWC will be offered to undergo a Train the Trainer course for free. This will enable them to deliver the women’s leadership training course to their community women in their language, with support from the VIRWC training team. Call for Expression of Interest The Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition (VIRWC) will deliver a leadership course for senior immigrant and refugee women from September to October, 2009. This is in recognition of the lack of senior immigrant and refugee women’s representation in policies and programs pertaining to positive ageing, elder abuse prevention, power of attorney and guardianship, living safely, health and physical activities and employment. The participants for the training that we are looking for are senior women (above the age of 50) who have the time, basic English skills (at least Level 3), and the passion to advocate for issues concerning with women and ageing. This training will open participants to networks and opportunities for involvement in mainstream advocacy. The training will be held in collaboration with the Council on the Ageing (COTA) at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. The dates of the training are as follows: September, 2009: 7th (Mon), 14th (Mon), 23rd (Wed), 30th (Wed) October, 2009: 5th (Mon), 22nd (Thurs)-field trip, 28th (Wed) For more information, ring VIRWC office on 96541243 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
