Do you know
Your best dish? Your most moving food memory? Your secret ingredient for community harmony? Would you like to hear stories ....stirred and shared by women? Between Friday 25 January 2008 and Sunday 27 January 2008, 11 women participated in a 3-day workshop in Seymour, regional Victoria. The 11 women who cooked and shared their recipes and stories of ‘community harmony’ were:
Caroline Lambert, Sheryl Furman, Clare Nugent, Lily Rosanna Fuentes, Nazife Sahin, Zelaikha Nurani Akram, Vienna Toma, Wendy Alexander, Margaret Majok, Nora Simkin and Melba Marginson.
They brought various diversity – cultural (Chilean, Malaysian, Filipino, Afghani, South African, Iraqi, Sudanese, Turkish and Anglo-Saxon Australian), religious, linguistic, sexuality, to the 'kitchen.'
They cooked their favourite recipes, brought their own ingredients and cooking pots, told stories of love, harmony, conflict and family around food, and came up with 'recipes' to solve some of the ‘conflicts’ they experience as women. They sang songs about food, community, life, struggles and country, they reflected on what they missed and the longings they have within them despite the busy lives they now live in Australia.
The workshop was facilitated by artist/director Catherine Simmonds, who effectively used creative drama to move the women into a re-enactment of their experiences. As expected, drama is a powerful medium for a group of women, especially when they are from non-English speaking backgrounds, as it allows all of the women to share and speak to each other without having to worry about whether they speak good English or not.
The short film documentary of the weekend workshop, directed by Riza Manalo Eteve, will be a 20 minute condensed version of the main themes from the weekend. At the launch, there will be an interactive discussion with the audience facilitated by Ms Simmonds and the women who took part in the weekend workshop. The conversations that started in the film will be continued on March 1, this time with hundreds of women. After the film screening, our audience will walk to the Queen Victoria Women's Centre where real food will be served, and the symbolic RECIPE FOR COMMUNITY HARMONY will be cooked. Certificates will be presented to women who completed the Get Skilled Training in 2007. Then it will be time for lunch and anyone who would like to can join in the dancing and fun.
This is one day of the year where you can also wear your favourite cultural dress and mix with other Victorian women and celebrate your cultural diversity! Enjoy your day out - and celebrate International Women's Day with us!
