HUME City Council, VIRWC and Sisters in Strength: A WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATION

HerStory - 100th International Women's Day Victoria

1

Migrant and Refugee Women’s contributions to life in Victoria

Her Story is a migrant and refugee women’s project to celebrate 100th International Women’s Day.

It will be launched at 11am on Friday, 4th March 2011 at the Immigration Museum of Victoria.

The Project

Migrant and refugee women are invited to share their stories of contributions to life in Victoria
– through participation in civic and political activities,
how they have made a difference and continue to make a difference for social justice,
women’s rights, and for a multicultural Australia.

Many migrant and refugee women have inspirational stories.
This Project invites them to write these stories on 3 pages of A4 white paper.
The written stories, in English or in another language preferred by the women,
will be kept in Albums and displayed at the Immigration Museum for the rest of 2011.

More migrant and refugee women will be invited to visit the Immigration Museum and write their stories throughout the year.

How can women share their stories?

Migrant and refugee women will be writing their stories at the launch of Her Story on 4th March 2011.
However, they also have the liberty to write their stories at home and bring them to the launch,
or send them electronically to VIRWC by 1st March 2011. The stories can be handwritten or typed.

How can organizations participate?

The Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition (VIRWC) is coordinating “Her Story” in collaboration with
the Ethnic communities Council Victoria.  All organizations and local governments are welcome to support the Project
and celebrate the Centenary of International Women’s Day with the migrant and refugee women on 4th of March.

How can you support “Her Story”?

The VIRWC has received some funds from the Australian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Alliance (AIRWA),
a national advocacy body for multicultural women.
The Project needs additional financial support to be effective and successful.

With as little as $200 you can contribute to a successful celebration with a large number of multicultural women on 4th of March.
Your contribution will help towards the purchase of the Albums and towards the catering and entertainers’ fees for the launch.

Donations can be:

  • sent by cheque to the VIRWC, Level 1, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000
  • made online from the VIRWC Appeal page on www.virwc.org.au or
  • paid online by ringing VIRWC office 9654 1243.

Please encourage your clients and staff to write their stories and attend the launch.
